Had an eventful weekend.
We had a wedding in our house! One of the first friends we made up here used our living room to get hitched. I was hesitant to the whole thing, but I am glad we went through with it. It was lovely and I got some decent pictures of it. I figure how many times in a houses life will there be the chance of a wedding inside of its walls?
We went to the Apple store for a replacement power supply for Cassandra’s MacBook. We left the Apple store with a few more expensive shiny bits of consumer goods. AirPort express for the living room, some new ear buds for me, and a bumper for Cassandra’s phone (care to guess which color?).
We also went to REI and I picked up some Vibram FiveFinger KSO TREKs. Awesome shoes. Absolutely amazing shoes. I greatly recommend them to everyone to at least try out. They are shoes that make you want to run. And they make darn good driving shoes too. Speaking of driving…
We got a new key cut for the Porsche, and a new cover for her existing one. Also had all the other keys for it de-programed so they cant start her. While we were at the dealership they washed her up nice and pretty, and replaced some of the burnt out tail lights we have been neglecting to get fixed. Also found out that the prior owner took her to her original dealership for all of her services, including recording each of the scheduled ones in the book. We found out that the previous owner took her to the track a few times too. This makes me very happy. The car was loved.
Went to the hardware store and looked at bathroom/kitchen remodeling stuff. Found some nice carpet as well. Came away with fireplace accessories like a wood holder for both inside by the fireplace, and on the outside of the house on the deck. Also bought a wine chiller for no good reason, but it was on sale so I feel justified. Hey it works for me.
We finally went to the liquor store, after meaning to for a long time. Picked up some more Perl vodka that was luckily on sale. Cassandra is trying out a few new spiced rums. Admiral Nelsons makes a 101 proof fifth that she wanted to give a good grog. She also picked up some vanilla stuff that I haven’t seen before. I picked up some Seagrams Seven on a whim, and am glad I did. Drove back home and the Porsche was already dirty again. Sigh. A strange and great thing we found when we were pulling the booze out of the fronk was that the Porsche dealership put the paper bag into a cardboard box, and lined the interior with bubble wrap to keep it from rattling around and possibly breaking. I like this place.
After we got home Cassandra asked me “Why don’t you call around and have some firewood delivered? You can take Grace to get some cash.” Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth I jumped on the invitation. Called a guy with some wood and a thrashed ol’ Ford and asked him to deliver some.
Pulled the Destroyer of Hip Bones off of the battery tender, put some air in her tires, cleaned and lubed her chain, made sure she still had some oil (she is a Triumph after all), and clicked her to life. Man I love to ride. I have been itching for a ride all winter long, and today reminded me why. Just an awesome feeling going back out. Great big hearty and cheerful waves from my neighbors were awesome. A pedestrian gave me a thumbs up at an intersection too. I really wanted to stay out on her but I know better then to press my luck.
While I was gone (it takes 45 minutes to get to the bank and back) Cassandra got to work cleaning the Nissan. Man did she need a bath. Holy hell. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Marshmallow weighs 20lbs less now from all the winter road crap that Cassandra washed away. Cassandra was also kind enough to take the carpet shampooer to the interior too. She told me that “if you have to go to a job you hate, and you have to drive this boring and crappy car that you also aren’t particularly fond of, you should at least have a clean place to sit.” I sure do love her.
And that brings us to the wood. So home dude in the beat to shit Ford delivered it about 2 hours late. No big deal except the sun still isn’t exactly sticking around for long. It took him the better part of an hour to unload it into our driveway, which brings us to about 6pm. It took us a further 5 hours to move it from whence it was chucked, to the other side of the house; stacked and organized into the “no way in hell this is burning this year” rack; the “we might be able to burn it if we get a cold snap later in the spring” rack; and the “we will have to try, but this should burn right now” rack inside the house. And we did all of this in the dark. Yes I said “we.” If you have a problem with Cassandra helping me move and stack firewood you can go suck eggs. That shit was hard, and having her help was god damn awesome.
I can’t describe how amazing the tacos tasted after that. Or how awesome the Seven and Seven tasted.
The last thing I am doing this weekend is updating my workhorse server Gretchen to current software revisions. It is already going poorly, but eh. If it was easy to update a FreeBSD install with a custom kernel and some not-exactly-off-the-shelf internet service packages running on a Sunfire v440 sparc server then anyone could do it and I wouldn’t be paid the big bucks.
Finally took a nap while some computer code compiled, with a Corgi named Sammy to keep me company. Now I write and share, and contemplate a shower.
